What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency can happen suddenly, and it can be challenging to know whether your situation needs immediate attention. Understanding the signs of a dental emergency can be the difference-maker in getting the care and relief you need. Some signs to look for include:

  • A severe toothache that prevents you from focusing on anything but the discomfort
  • A tooth that's been recently knocked out
  • An extensive fracture to your tooth
  • An abscess at the base of your tooth

If you think you're experiencing a dental emergency, you should call us. Dr. Dhillon and her team can help identify signs of trauma or infection over the phone and help you schedule in-person treatment.

24/7 Care for New & Existing Patients

Whether you're a new or existing patient, you can reach our Livermore dental office 24/7. Additionally, we'll provide afterhours emergency dental care when applicable.

When you arrive at our office, we'll immediately work to identify the source of your discomfort. Not only will we ask you questions about how you're feeling, but we'll take a series of x-rays as needed. Although our initial approach is always the same, our next steps depend on the nature of your dental emergency.

Helping Repair Damaged Teeth

3d render of damaged toothAlthough a chipped or broken tooth may not present immediate discomfort, the chance of bacteria entering your tooth and reaching the dental pulp is high. If an entire section or a small portion of your tooth has come off, you should save it and bring it to your appointment.

We'll begin by assessing whether the tooth fragment can be reattached. If the damage is too extensive for reattachment, we offer numerous restorative treatments. Your Livermore emergency dentist will discuss your options to find the perfect solution for you.

Treating Infections with Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is necessary when bacteria has entered your tooth's pulp chamber and created an infection. Emergency root canal therapy is a five-step process that may require more than one visit.

  1. To better understand the extent of the infection, your Livermore emergency dentist will take a series of x-rays and conduct an oral exam.
  2. She'll then prepare the tooth by applying an anesthetic and dental dam, a small latex sheet that protects your tooth during the procedure.
  3. Once the tooth has been prepared, she'll create an opening that allows her to remove any infected or damaged pulp from the tooth.
  4. After she removes the infected pulp, she'll fill the tooth's root canals, located at the tooth's base, with an antibacterial material.
  5. Finally, she'll help protect the tooth by placing a filling or crown.

Once the procedure is complete, we'll provide you with after-care instructions. Additionally, we encourage you to ask questions and are happy to answer any that you may have.

Skilled & Compassionate Extractions

woman checking her smile after getting emergency dentistry services in Livermore, CATooth extraction is a final measure when decay or a break is too severe for repair. Dr. Dhillon will carefully examine the tooth and make every attempt to avoid performing an extraction. If your tooth is infected, we may send you home with antibiotics and pain relievers to bring the infection down before removing the tooth. This helps prevent complications following the procedure.

The extraction process is a simple one. We'll prepare the area with an anesthetic, remove pieces of the tooth from the gums, and control any bleeding. You may or may not require stitches to close the incision, depending on the nature of the extraction. Above all else, we'll work with you to restore the fullness of your smile.
